Checking In with Game of Thrones

This turned out to be a lot better than I imagined.  I had thought the show was going to be fantasy epic by the numbers, but it has turned out to be a highly complex political drama that happens to take place in a medieval fantasy world.  I'm up to the 7th episode so far and I think every episode has been an improvement on the last, with the last two episodes being especially stellar.  I usually hate medieval fantasy, but when a fantasy show is closer to The Wire in tone than anything on television save for Treme, I can deal with some overwrought dialogue and deus ex machina (of which there has actually been very little on Game of Thrones so far).  Peter Dinklage is still the best thing about the show, but thats more a complement on his acting (and the writing of his character) than a mark against the rest of the show.

Truth, Justice, Mike Huckabee, and Superman

Everything about this "controversy" makes my head hurt.  Silliness aside, the Siegle and Shuster estates have A LOT more to upset about than Superman renouncing his American citizenship for eight pages.

More later.

Game of Thrones

I watched the pilot episode of this after getting back from Canada.  Its... pretty decent I guess.  Nothing too special so far.  An expert on this sort of thing has informed me that the story will pick up as the season moves forward, and I'm hoping it becomes a bit less high fantasy by the numbers.  So far, I'm going to keep watching for Peter Dinklage.

I don't think I'm not going to run out and read the novels.  Mostly because I don't have that kind of time.  Though if this series becomes a success (and I think it will), maybe that'll force George R.R. Martin to actually finish the books in a timely manner.
