They Live

Sort of a random selection here.  Thanks to the internet I'm listening to a lot of bands that aren't signed to labels, don't have any albums, and play in venues on the other side of the world.  Its kind of crazy.  I was reading recently about the technology that will probably replace blue-ray and I can't help but wonder if anyone is even going to bother with buying physical media by then.  Heck, I haven't even bothered getting a blue-ray player.

In terms of the actual mix, its the usual mess of stuff.  I usually can't get into LCD Soundsystem, but I like the track on here quite a bit.  Maybe because its a cover?  I'm not sure.  The title of the mix is, of course, the best line from the best thing Roddy Piper has ever done.

....And I'm all out of Bubblegum!

1. The Grey Ship- EMA
2. The Alter- Why Oak
3. Spell- Slowdance
4. Back Where I Began- Pure X
5. Lord Knows Best- Dirty Beaches
6. Do What You Will- Papercuts
7. The Park- Secret Cities
8. As I've Known- The Wrens
9. I'm Losing Myself- Robin Pecknold (w/ Ed Droste)
10. Advice and Vices- Chelsea Wolfe
11. Casual Diamond- SLEEP ∞ OVER
12. Go Outside- Cults
13. Live Alone- LCD Soundsystem

How Research Works: XVII

GRAD STUDENT OFFICE: 2am

CONFUSED
I went to a business school seminar earlier...

GRAD STUDENT
...To get to the free food?

CONFUSED
Exactly.  They gave me all sort of ideas about monetizing my skills.

GRAD STUDENT
Really?!  But we don't have any skills.  We're grad students.

CONFUSED
I was thinking of monetizing my blog.

GRAD STUDENT
That sounds like a worse idea than becoming a grad student.

Canadia

I'm headed up to Montreal for a few days.  There will be pictures of poutine when I get back.  The blog will be on automatic posting mode until then.

The Pita Place

How did almost three years pass without anybody telling me that is a secret Turkish restaurant very close to where I live?  Though having now discovered it, and stood in the dinning room, it appears it is still a secret to most people.  I think I've found my new non-bagel eatery of choice on the island though.

ON THE PHONE: 8pm

GRAD STUDENT
Hello...?

SUPER CHEERY UNDERGRAD PERSON
Hi! This is your undergraduate alma mater calling.  I'd like to talk to you for a few minutes about your time here.

GRAD STUDENT
This really isn't the best time...

SUPER CHEERY UNDERGRAD PERSON
...Thats ok.  I just have a few dozen questions.

(A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF TIME LATER)

SUPER CHEERY UNDERGRAD PERSON
So good to hear from you.  Now that you're thinking about your halcyon days running amok with relatively few responsibilities, I'd like to ask you for a donation.

GRAD STUDENT
I really don't think I can afford to give you anything right now.  Maybe if I ever get out of here and get a real job...

SUPER CHEERY UNDERGRAD PERSON
We can take donations as low as $500.  Its really not that much!

GRAD STUDENT
I think you are misinformed on that point.

Scott Pilgrim of the Dead

This combines many of my favorite things.

Research

These "How Research Works" posts are mostly meant to be humorous slice of life accounts of what it is like being a grad student.  Almost all of them are based on actual conversations I've had or witnessed, with some embellishment for my own amusement.  I'm not sure how many more of them I'm going to do, since this territory has been covered quite extensively by PhD comics, but I like the format so I might expand the topic matter (and change the title) soon.

I'm also using these little strips as an excuse to do some non-scientific writing.  A trend I hope to continue as my work load at school increases past insanity.

How Research Works: XV

GRAD STUDENT OFFICE- 9am

ADVISOR
Thanks for covering my class on Friday.

GRAD STUDENT
No problem.  I think it went well.

ADVISOR
Me too.  Do you mind covering my next one?

GRAD STUDENT
Sure.  Wednesday?

ADVISOR
Today.  Fifteen minutes from now.

Alan Moore's Green Lantern

I might have implied in a previous post that Geoff Johns has made a career out of expanding on stories written by Alan Moore.  Apparently this caused a bit of nerd rage.  For your consideration, I submit a single page...

From: Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #2
By: Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill

I can spot almost a dozen throwaway references made in this single page that have been used in Geoff John's Green Lantern run.

Midnight Breakfasts

This one is a lot lighter than the last couple.  Not everything I like has to be dark and pretentious, just most things.

Beach Fossils actually played at Stony Brook this week, though I didn't make it.  I heard they were well received.

1.  Millions of People Running Around- Magic Bullets
2.  Daydream- Beach Fossils
3.  Most Wanted- Cults
4.  Breakin' the Law- The Babies
5.  Fallen in Love- Smith Westerns
6.  Life at Dusk- Minks
7.  Georgia- Yuck
8.  Zombies- Surf City
