Planetary

According to Warren Ellis' mailing list, the art for the last issue of Planetary is finally finished. Not too bad considering the script was finished three years ago.

Planetary might just be my favorite comic series of all time. Its got giant monsters, 80's Hong Kong gangsters, transdimensional space vehicles, and pulp heroics (and all in the first 4 issues!). The overarching story, involving an organization set up to explore the strange phenomena of the world while battling what amounts to evil versions of the Fantastic Four, is basically just an excuse for series author Warren Ellis to play with all kinds of archetypes from all kinds of media. Seriously, there is an issue centered around Tarzan's life in the jungle and another involving a secret cabal made up of Sherlock Holmes and Dracula.

The first issue can be downloaded for free off DC Comics' website and the whole series is worth checking out. I know I'm excited for the last issue. At the very least it means I can finally buy the last collection.

I also really like Warren Ellis' FreakAngels, but thats free online, weekly, and much less ostentatious.
